The Gulf of Revellata

Writer: sognudimaresognudimare

The Gulf of Revellata is a gulf of the Mediterranean Sea located in the town of Calvi in Haute-Corse (Corsica region). It is a privileged bailing site for water bombers. It is also an underwater sanctuary which is among the most famous diving spots in Corsica: gorgonians, red coral, groupers, moray eels... find here favorite places which delight divers. All the diversity of the Corsican seabed is concentrated here.

From the Revellata belvedere, there is an extensive view of the gulf and the peninsula.

Geography

The V-shaped gulf is located west of Calvi and east of the Revelatta peninsula. It is separated from the Gulf of Calvi by the peninsula occupied by the city centre of Calvi and the citadel.

Small in size, its two extremities are the Pointe de la Revellata and the Pointe Saint-François to the north of Calvi.

The rocky shore is dotted with coves. L'Alga, a sandy beach, occupies the bottom of the gulf next to the hamlet of Grotta Niella. Another beach nestles in the cove of l'Oscelluccia to the north of the eponymous point. The small beach of Roncu is located to the left of the Saint-François point.

A coastal path, providing access to the coves, runs along the shoreline along its entire length to the end of Revellata where there is a lighthouse and an oceanographic research station.

The peninsula, oriented south-north over a length of 2.5 km, ends with an islet.

It culminates at Capu Belloni (169 m). Its very steep western coast is a succession of coves and points.

The Gulf of Calvi is sometimes seen in its largest dimension, the "bay" of Revellata is then part of it, as is the bay of Algajo, of similar dimensions, located to the east.

Anchoring

Boaters can anchor in the Alga cove, sheltered from the southwest winds (Libeccio) and on the northern part of the Oscellucia point; the southern part of this point shelters from the north winds (Tramontane).

The small port under the northern tip of Revellata, at the foot of the lighthouse, is the private port for the STARESO underwater and oceanographic research station in Calvi and is therefore not usable.
