The Bearded Vulture is a raptor that feeds exclusively on scavengers. Situated at the top of the food chain, its species is seriously threatened with extinction.
Life in the Corsican mountains has been gradually disappearing since the end of the 20th century (abandonment of livestock farming) and it is increasingly difficult for people to feed on carcasses without outside help.
The Bearded Vulture is an osteophagous bird. It feeds on bones, which is why it is nicknamed the bone breaker . Its food consists of 80% bones, legs, tendons and ligaments, sheep, goats and other small animals that it ingests thanks to the elasticity of its throat.
There are between 16 and 18 bearded vultures in Corsica to date. This is thanks to the work of the Corsican Regional Natural Park, as there were only 4 couples left in 2014.
