The island of Caprera is part of the Maddalena archipelago, off the northwest coast of Sardinia. It is a piece of land with almost no height, with Mediterranean vegetation of scrubland and maquis and white sand beaches along its 34 km of coastline. Acquired by Giuseppe Garibaldi , Caprera was the last home of the Italian revolutionary, born in Nice. Long a military base and land, which has preserved it, it is today a superb place connected to the island of Maddalena.
Caprera, despite being an island, is connected to the island of La Maddalena by an artificial land bridge, which facilitates a visit to discover the almost virgin coves and dive enjoying its seabed. One of the most beautiful beaches is in the bay of Cala Brigantina , under Mount Teialone.
On the west coast of the island, next to the ancient military buildings of Stagnali, there is the Caprera nature reserve . To the south we will enjoy the views of Porto Palma and the small island of Porco .
The northwest coast also offers other interesting destinations. Among them are the coves Napoletana and Caprarese , Cala Serena and Isola degli Italiani , as well as Cala di Garibaldi , which tends to have more tourist traffic. Cala Napoletana is another beach that looks like paradise, in the north of the island of Caprera, which is reached by a dirt road.
The beaches in the eastern area are less accessible and have small coves accessible only by sea. Among them, Cala Coticcio is one of the most beautiful.
In 1981, the island of Caprera came out of military control to become a nature reserve. Open to tourists who come to its beaches and to research in the house-museum of one of the Italian heroes, Giuseppe Garibaldi, Garibaldi spent his last years confined here.
