The purity of its waters, the richness of its heritage and its history, present Calvi to you as a beauty spot on the Isle of Beauty. We invite you to discover this little corner of paradise nestled in the northwest of Corsica.
From its alleys to its citadel…
The most remarkable is, without a doubt, the spectacle offered by its majestic Genoese citadel. Like a jewel box set on the water, it looks out into the distance at the snow-capped massifs of Monte Grossu which reflect their shadow on the sea. Then, if you stroll through the narrow streets of the city, delicatessens, Corsican designer boutiques, beauty and wellness shops and restaurant terraces await you under the protection of Sainte Marie. They promise you unusual and unforgettable encounters!
From its marina to its long fine sandy beach...
At the foot of the imposing Genoese building, the boats of fishermen and pleasure boaters moor at the colorful marina. A few steps away but still in the city center, is its long beach of fine sand and immaculate white. It is fringed by a pine forest that you can walk along the wooden footbridge that borders it. After your swim and your sun cure, this green oasis promises you rejuvenating spots of shade.
Illustrious characters as a legacy…
From Christopher Columbus to Napoleon…
A hotel, an avenue, a statue… Calvi la belle stands proudly in Balagne and carries within it the entire legacy of Christopher Columbus. To tell the truth, the historical evidence on the birthplace of the great navigator remains vague, but, in the end… it doesn’t matter.
The people of Calvados are nevertheless proud to show their attachment to this episode of history... their history. Now head towards the citadel, to see, in particular, the ruins of the house that once housed the Culombu family.
Moreover, another great name has been added to the city's illustrious historical figures, that of Napoleon Bonaparte. Laurent Giubega, his godfather, and his house in the citadel, but also his nephew Prince Pierre and his famous castle, have thus allowed Calvi to enter the very closed circle of European Napoleonic Cities.
Calvi, always faithful…
However, its true letters of nobility were given to the city by Genoa. It was through its motto, " Civitas Calvi Semper Fidelis", that Calvi wanted to prove its loyalty to the most serene republic. Because of this loyalty, the city stood up, first of all, against Pisa. Then, during the siege of Calvi in 1794, it also fought against the Great Revolt of the Corsicans of Pascal Paoli . And it was then that the Genoese city met the famous Admiral Nelson... or rather the opposite, in fact!
